The Old Town Stewards Program has existed since last year, and since then, you may have seen them around town working to beautify Eureka. Now, they’re helping kick off volunteer month in Old Town.
On Saturday, September 6th, Volunteer month is being kicked off at 9a.m. at the old town Gazebo.
“We will be doing cleanups, planting, trying to get native plants put in around here. We're going to be working with a number of volunteer groups. This is all headed up by Eureka Community Services. We will have some snacks and coffee and all of the likes. It'll be a great opportunity to meet the community and get out into the area,” said Siena Parish, outreach coordinator with Uplift Eureka.
There will be four cleanups happening this month.
“We do a lot of trash pickup in the area as well as just trying to maintain the plants, keep weeds out of the area, water and keep the plants as alive as possible throughout the area. We also do a lot of work over at Clark Plaza. But this Saturday will mainly be centering on the Gazebo,” said Parish.
“We have a really incredible group of volunteers, you’ll typically see them around in their orange vests or with their buckets and with their hats, either doing pick up or gardening,” she said.
Volunteering in Eureka and being a steward goes a lot further than just picking up trash.
“We act as almost ambassadors to the area. I really enjoy the opportunity to give back to our community. And through being an old town steward, it's opened up a lot of opportunities for me to give back. Each week we have cleanups here in Old Town, Eureka, as well as the connection Club is one of my favorite things to do. That's every Tuesday and Thursday at Saint Vincent, and it's really just an opportunity for anyone to come and join,” said Logan Caswell, Volunteer with the Old Town Stewards.
Volunteer Month in Eureka will continue with events each Saturday and you can win a $250 Piersons Gift Card if you attend all four.
They'll be On September 6th at the Old Town Gazebo at 9am, September 13th at Sequoia Park at 9am, Del Norte Dog Park in Eureka at 9am, and the Sequoia Park Gazebo at noon.
