Find Shelter

Currently there are two organizations in Eureka that provide overnight shelter options:

The Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation, and the Eureka Rescue Mission. See below for further information on accessing shelter.

For victims of domestic violence, Humboldt Domestic Violence Services may be able to provide clients in crisis with emergency shelter in safe and undisclosed locations. Shelter is not guaranteed, and intake is required to access emergency services. Call 707-443-6042 for more information.

Betty's Annex

Betty's Annex is a shelter for single women and women with children. Single women with children must get a CalWorks or CWS referral sent to Betty in order to stay at the Annex. Though it is not strictly a domestic violence shelter, many of the residents have experienced or are currently experiencing abusive relationships.

For the safety of residents, the Annex is a closed facility. Clients are able to stay at the Annex for six months with the primary goal of obtaining stable, permanent housing. In addition, all clients receive case management services and meet with their case manager at least once a week. Lunch and dinners are provided.  Clients must sign in and out of the facility when leaving and must return by 9pm unless working a late shift.

Betty's House (Family Shelter & Medical Respite)

Screenshot 2025-08-06 092601.jpg

Betty's Family Shelter has 6 units available.  Referrals for the Family Shelter are accepted from CalWORKS and Child Welfare Services.  Once a referral is received, Betty contacts the family to schedule an assessment to determine suitability for the Family Shelter program. Family Shelter residents may stay in the program for up to 6 months with the possibility for an extension on a case-by-case basis.

Families work with the Case Management Team to set goals and assess their progress.  The Family Shelter requires residents to be employed or actively seeking employment, actively seeking housing, attending Case Management meetings, and meeting goals set by the Case Management Team and other agencies.  All school-aged children must be enrolled in and actively attending school.  One of the main objectives of the Family Shelter is to fill the gap in services in our community.  The Family Shelter does this by prioritizing single fathers, two parent families, and families with teenagers, as these families have extremely limited shelter options that would allow them to stay together.

The Medical Respite program has 10 beds available.  Residents enter the Medical Respite program via referral from Providence Hospital’s Care Network Team.  Once screened and approved by Providence staff, residents move from the hospital to Betty’s House immediately after being discharged.  Residents are approved for a 21 day stay at Betty’s House, in order to recover from the illness or injury they were being treated for at the hospital.  The Providence Health Care Transitions Team is responsible for the medical care and case management of the residents.
